April 2009

The Challenge

I invited three active Beading Daily forum members to make something with a piece of hand-dyed silk ribbon that I had picked up from Class Act Designs in February at the Tucson bead shows. The ribbons measured 3 feet long and 1/2 inch wide. All had some green in their coloring and were naturally crinkled. (Participants could iron the ribbons if they wanted to a smooth texture.) The only rules were to make a piece of jewelry using the ribbon with any other additional materials they wanted to use.--Michelle Mach, Beading Daily editor

About her project: Sherri used C-lon cord in an olive color that mached the edges of the ribbon to do the bulk of the knotting, catching the ribbon in knots throughout the piece. She also used pink, blue, and olive Delica beads and two 8 mm clear glass beads. The two sides of the watch band are different.

About her project: Jenni used Italian Wire Lace for the second strand and created a third strand of 6mm Swarovski cube beads and Vintaj brass chain that match both the ribbon and the Murano glass focal pendant. To avoid having a too-bulky clasp, she tied a knot at one end and created a loop wrapped with brass wire at the other.

About her project: This ribbon reminded Dawn of the varied hues of the leaves of African Violets. She used size 11 seed beads in irridescent green, lilac, and clear pink, size 15 dark violet seed beads, and light lilac 3x4mm rice-shaped fresh water pearls to create the netted lace and the embellishments. For the clasp, she used a brooch given to her as a young girl by her grandma, running the pin through loops of the netting and behind the ribbon tails to hold it in place
