A heads-up! Price of silver continues to fall!

    Hi everyone!

Just a little heads-up!  I've been watching the silver market and the price of silver has been steadily dropping over the last 2 weeks or so.  Today on www.riogrande.com, the price of silver has dropped to $12.81 an ounce.  Today on Rio you can buy sterling wire for $17.87 and ounce.  Argentium is $20.54 an ounce.  The price of their basic sterling findings also drops with the market price, so now would be a good time to stock up on crimps, crimp covers, wire guards, and headpins.

Just thought you all would like to know!

Lois, I need some stuff to sell so I can stock up also. Maybe it will keep dropping even more.

I try to watch the price daily.  And if the price ever drops below $10 an ounce like it did last fall, I'll stock up again, this time on dead-soft wire.  I bought a whole pound of half-hard last fall (for an unheard-of $12.66 an ounce!), only to recently find out its best to buy dead-soft for wire wrapping!

Sherri-- but isn't it the half hard you want for making your own findings and earwires? I think that's what I read somewhere....

Sherri, I've been wanting to stock up (more than I did a couple weeks ago) on silver, so THANK YOU for the heads up!

I'm probably going to place another Rio order, perhaps later this week.  (The order I placed a couple of weeks ago isn't here yet, and I haven't forgotten the findings you wanted.)  Do you want in on another order?  Or maybe if you're going to stock up yourself, I could add to your order???

    Have a beadiful day!

That's good news, to say the least.  Thank you Sherri!  I don't need anything right at the moment but I'll certainly be watching that too.  And I remember when it was $5.xx an ounce...I think those days are long, long gone...

    You're welcome!!!

I've been THINKING about ordering some dead-soft argentium wire, but haven't decided yet.  I bought this great book on wire wrapping and the author says to use dead-soft wire, and using square wire is the best for settings.  Unfortunately, last fall I bought all half-hard!  What will I do with 18g wire that is half hard, I don't know.

I'm going to continue to watch the market, and if it continues to drop through the week, it may push me to want to place an order.  I don't know yet!

I hope you're right!  I'm finding though, that if I have to grip the wire too much with my pliers (as I do using half-hard wire), such as when making loops for eye pins, that I end up putting a dent in one spot in the wire.  Not sure how to avoid this, but I would think using dead-soft I wouldn't have to grip as much.  Then you can harden the finding when finished by tapping it with a chasing hammer.  That's what I've read anyway.

Have you tried using Tool Magic?  It's that stuff you coat your pliers with, and when it dries it leaves a thin rubber coating.  I love it.  I have the clear kind, and I use it on all of my pliers.  It takes a couple of hours to dry, but if you do it before you go to bed, that's not an issue. :p  It has saved me a lot of frustration!

Thanks for the headsup on the prices going down.  I've been needing to buy some wire to make earwires and other such stuff. :D  Now, if only gold would temporarily plummet... heheh.

Thanks for the suggestion!  What does the rubber coating do?  My pliers grip fine, but using half-hard wire I find I have to grip harder to make the bends in the wire.

And the cost of silver rose just a little bit today (by 9 cents an ounce), but you have to keep watching it.  It goes up and down, but it has been going down more often than up lately.

The coating basically just absorbs a bit of your tension, rather than putting it into the wire.  It also makes your pliers leave less dents in general, since it makes them entirely smooth.  I haven't used much wire above 20 gauge, so I'm not sure if it would do the same thing with 18ga+, although I've heard that it does.

Another thing to try (although you may already be doing it) is to sort of use the motion to make the bends, instead of just the pliers. As in, .. hm. Hard to explain!  ... When I make a loop, for example, I try to use the motion of making the curve to make the loop, rather than gripping really hard with the pliers.  I have no idea if that makes any sense at all! ><;  I guess it's one of those things that's easy to get if you get it, and hard to get if you don't?  And I'm just not very good at explaining things.  Sorry! :x

No worries, Nicole!  I know what you mean.

I'll buy some Tool Magic and will give it a try.  Thanks for the tip! Big Smile

*boing!*  Unfortunately, I'm not getting it.  Sherri, would you mind trying to translate Nicole's suggestion?  I'm always looking for ways to improve the quality of my jewelry...

    Thanks!
