Want to learn a new stitch together? Join us!

    Hi everyone,

Lisa and I recently talked about a book I often recommended and mentioned on this site: Zulu Inspired Beadwork by Diane Fitzgerald. And we thought that it would be fun to learn a new stitch at the same time. We chose the Slinky Chain on page 63. So if someone owns this book, likes beadweaving (or likes to try) and wants to join us in learning something new, sharing experiences and tips, talking about the problems coming up along the way, offer and get help........you're welcome to join us! The more, the merrier, right?

The background for us to post this on BD was the amazing outcome of the SSE earring swaps. One says "earring" and look at the different outcomes. And now let's see what everyone comes up using/learning this stitch.

    Have fun!

For those who aren't familiar with Zulu beadwork, this is from the book's foreword:

"Beads and beadwork are an integrap part of many African cultures, not least the famous Zulu Nation of southern Africa."

    and

"...there is an undeniable need to record fully the rich diversity of Zulu beading techniques, lest they should be lost in generations to come.  This is the overriding aim of this book by Diane Fitzgerald who, over a period of years, has studies the broades spectrum of indigenous Zulu beading techniques."

    From the introduction:

"Zulu beadwork is multifaceted and has been studied, written about, and exhibited for cultural, aesthetic, and historic reasons.  However, I believe this book is the first to be devoted to the bead weaving techniques used by Zulu women.  The skill and intricacy exhibited in Zulu beadwork is unike that of any other culture I have seen."

For those who are joining us in our beading journey to southern Africa, both Dagmar and I are planning to stitch the Slinky Chain in 8 sides, using bright colors.  We're not in any hurry, this is a work-at-your-own-pace undertaking.

    Have a beadiful day!

Ooooo OOOOO oooo I'd love to do this but I don't have that book...let me see if I can find one and I'll let you know.  I do know what Zulu beadwork is, it's beautiful, I just don't have that book.

Wow Inca, that was fast!!! Thank you!!!  I know, I found out the same thing.  Only I'm going to the rock swap this weekend and don't know what exactly I'll find there so I kind of don't want to buy this just yet.  I'm going to see if I can get it interlibrary loan for now and then buy it later.  But the library isn't open until tomorrow (of course).   I used to have, probably, hopefully still have Speaking With Beads by Jean Morris and someone else but I can't find that in my books this morning.   It isn't under the bed either (oops, did I say that?).  Of course, that doesn't have this stitch in it though.   So I'll let you all know tomorrow morning what the library says.  IhopeIhopeIhope....

one more thing...I don't know if it matters to anybody but I'm off the computer for a little while so if you post here again I might not get back on until sometime tonight.  I've been beading up a little storm over here the last few days (nope, it's a suprise) and I have a couple errands I've postponed and need to clean this place up some....

so I'll see you all later...

It's also available from the Interweave Bookstore on BeadingDaily which is why the title sounded familiar.

Last year at the "Damaged Book Sale" it was one of the books offered... maybe when they have that sale again it will be on the list.  I remember that Billy was looking to get it but I can't remember if he ever said he got it or notTongue Tied

I dont know where your "here" is. But I live in a small town in a small country - and beads and crafts dont seem to have gotten here yet ...

(which you will learn if you hang around the forum for awhile - cause I'm the one allways on a rant about how horribly impossible it is to get things I want ... )
