    Flower-Inspired Beading Challenge

We’ve recently enjoyed the online photo albums feature gorgeous gardens from a few BD friends, and those beautiful flowers have inspired an informal challenge.  [Note:  The guidelines below have been edited to include the most current info, as of 7/14/2009 lkt.]

    What:  Flower-Inspired Beading Challenge

When:  Between now and July 18

Who:  All are welcome, please post a note to let us know you’re participating.

How:  By midnight on July 18, e-mail a maximum of two (2) photos per entry to bdsubmissions@interweave.com with "Flower Challenge" in the subject line.  Include your name, title of your work(s), category entered, and e-mail address.

Categories:  There are two categories:  Beginning Bead Artist and Experienced Bead Artist.  Use your own judgment in selecting the category in which you should enter.

    • Your beaded creation can be jewelry or anything else you make with beads or even beads themselves, but must contain beads.
    • Your creation must be in some way inspired by flowers.
    • You may enter up to three (3) pieces.
    • Entries must have been created between April 26 and July 18, 2009.
    • It has been suggested that your two photos include one of the entire piece and one a close-up of an interesting detail.
    • You may submit your entry any time between now and July 18.
    • Use your own judgment in selecting the category in which you should enter; however, as a very rough guideline, those who have been beading for less than a year should enter the Beginning Bead Artist category and those who have been beading longer than a year should enter the Experienced Bead Artist category.  With that said, a bead artist who has been immersed in beads every day for six months and has polished their skills in multiple techniques should enter the Experienced category, whereas an artist who has only occasionally worked with beads for two years would probably choose the Beginning category.  The intent is that a relative beginner would enter the Beginning category, while everyone else would enter the Experienced category.
    • On August 1 the entry photos will be available online without any indication of the name of the artist.  Anyone who is interested may anonymously vote for their favorite in each of the two categories, as well as providing constructive feedback on any of the designs.  In the spirit of fairness, we ask that each person vote only once for each category. For inspiration, here are links to a couple of fabulous online photo albums featuring beautiful blooms:
    • On August 8 the votes will be tallied and the winner in each category announced.  The winner in the Beginning Bead Artist category will receive a packet of coordinating Swarovski crystal and handmade lampwork beads.  The winner in the Experienced Bead Artist category will receive a copy of Diane Fitzgerald’s beautiful book, The Beaded Garden.  The two category winners will also receive the privilege of proposing two (2) challenge topics each; the participants in the flower-inspired challenge will vote for their favorite, which will become the topic for the next challenge.

Or scroll through this thread, there are several gorgeous blooms posted within it.

Our intent is that this challenge will be very informal, with very few rules.   We hope you’ll join us and look forward to your flower-inspired creation!

    Have a beadiful day!

Yes, Lisa, I'm in for this!  I can't get enough flowers these days and beady flowers are the best of both worlds!

I'm in too! I think this will be fun. But I have a feeling that I'm gonna need to learn another beading stitch. Stick out tongue

When we get to the point of voting, we'll have to figure out how to post the pictures anonymously. Maybe we can send them all to one person who isn't participating and let that person post them all for voting. Or maybe even Michelle would be willing to help us out with that.

When reading the other thread about this I was thinking one of us could set up a separate Flickr account and everybody that participates would be emailed the login info and password for it. Then they could upload their own photo with a number. First person uploaded uses #1, the next person would use #2 and so on. That way it stays anonomyous without leaving anyone out if they want to participate. Or people could just use a specific title for their creation and we would use the titles to vote. Then on June 21st, voting can begin in another thread here. Just post your vote for which number or title the picture corresponds to. Does that make sense?

Cat-- that makes sense to me! It would be a really easy way of handling it.
Oh, and I'm in! I've had an idea stewing for a while... not I just gotta buy the beads!

    Cat :

Cat, that's an awesome idea!  Idea  I'll set up the Flikr account, and send an e-mail with login info to everyone who's said they want to participate.

    Cat :
Or people could just use a specific title for their creation and we would use the titles to vote.

To keep things simple, how about if everyone posts their creation(s) with whatever title they like, and we'll use the titles for voting.

    Cat :
Then on June 21st, voting can begin in another thread here. Just post your vote for which number or title the picture corresponds to.

That's exactly what I was thinking.  I'll put it on my calendar for June 21st.  I'm very much looking forward to seeing everyone's creations!  My internet connection is really slow today (must be sunspots affecting the satellite connection or something), so it may take awhile to set up the Flikr account and send e-mails, so please be patient.  I'll post an update when it's all done.  Happy beading everyone!

Titles sound good to me! That was a quick after thought, DUH!

I figured using Beading Daily Challenge or something similar would be a good username for the site, because we may end up using this site more often for other self represented challenges.

Don't know if I am in on this yet or not. I kind of want to but don't have a clue where to start with a flower design, well I do actually have an idea, just not sure yet but I'll let you all know if I decide to go ahead with it.

    Re: Flower-Inspired Beading Challenge

Hmmmm...  Flickr wants to be connected to a Yahoo account.  Which I have, but I'm not sure that's the best image server for our purposes.  And now that I think about it, maybe Michelle would like to get involved and set up a place on the BD site for us to upload our photos.

OR...  I could just use a different image server.  I'm fairly new to using them and I've got an account with PhotoBucket.  They work okay, but their site is pretty slow.

    Other thoughts?????

I figured this would happen and have already thought about that. All we need to do is set up an email account with Yahoo. No big deal, it's free. We could use it as a connect all for challenges or not use it at all (it's just a connection between Yahoo and Flickr. Flickr is a Yahoo service that's why it is wanting that info. If you set up a Yahoo email account for BD, then you could connect the Flickr account without a problem.

Or as you said we could use photobucket. I don't personally care for photobucket but hey it's what everyone else wants too.

Contacting Michelle is a good possibility as well. They are usually pretty accomodating here.

Now, Now; that would DRASTICALLY reduce our excuses for not posting photos Embarrassed for others to see!  Wink Big Smile   [Would that create a space problem on the server?]  Go for it !!

    Re: Flower-Inspired Beading Challenge

I sent Michelle an e-mail giving her a summary of what we’re up to and asking if BD would be willing to set up a place for us to post our photos.  In composing that e-mail, a few questions relating to the challenge ran through my cluttered mind.  Your thoughts on them would be appreciated:

    *      Any limit to the number of projects can each participant enter?

    *      Any limit to the number of photos per project can each participant post?

    *      Do we want to open voting to anyone interested, or keep it restricted to participants only?

    *      Does the voting need to be anonymous?  Personally, I won’t get my feelings hurt if you vote for someone else’s project, but do we foresee that as being a problem?

    *      How can we attract less-experienced beaders?  When I mentioned this challenge to some of my intermediate-level students, they all said they’d be too intimidated.  They don’t feel confident enough in their skills yet and feel that a simple project would be looked down upon by others.  Which is all balderdash.  So how do we get past their fear and convince them to share their talent with us?  Do you think it would gauche to post some open-ended inspirational ideas?  Or even practical ideas that we’ve considered and rejected for whatever reason?

Hope you’re all having fun beading!!!
