    Whats on your bookshelf?

I just bought Beading with Filgree by Cynthia Deis and Custom Cool Jewelry by Melinda Barta and am loving all the ideas.

I was curious about what everyone else has as far as books go.

With the addition of the 2 books above I have

    Beading with Cabachons

Both Stringing Style 1 and 2

    Bead on a Wire

    The Beaders Color Palette

    The Beaders Guide to Color

    The Art of Bead Embroidery

    All Wired Up

    The History of Beads

I will be a swallow, winging to warmer climes on the breath of the storm. I will be a deer, running swifter than the sunlight, sheltering in the birch thickets. I will be a salmon and swim the length of this great water in powerful surges; my scales will throw back the silver gleam of the Shining One like a melody of bright notes....Juliet Marillier

Hi Christina H,  I have alot of jewelry books but my favorite jewelry artist is Genevieve Sterbenz.  Her designs are wonderful and her color combinations always inspire me when I'm in a color rut.  The two books I have by her are The Color Book of Beaded Jewelry and BeadStyle.  BeadStyle is issued through Creative Homeowner if you look for it on the web.  I found both books at Barnes & Nobles.  Happy beading!

I also have a lot of jewelry and beading books. Here are some of my favorites:

Zulu Inspired Beadwork by Diane Fitzgerald (if you love beadweaving techniques other than the known ones like peyote or brick stitch)

Beading in the Native American Tradition by David Dean

All Wire Up by Mark Lareau (This was my beginner's book in wirework! Best choice!)

    Celtic Knots for Beaded Jewellery

Chinese Knots for Beaded Jewellery, both by Suzen Millodot

Of the last two I own the German version but I think that doesn't make a difference in their quality. Wink I love knotted jewelry and used many of the knots in my pieces.

All books I found on Amazon.de.

    Hi there,

I'm VERY new to the craft, and interestingly, I have many of the same books as you.

Chic & Easy Beading, Vol. 2
    Easy Beaded Jewelry
    The Impatient Beader
    Stringing Style 2
    Making Jewelry with Gemstone Beads
    Beading Basics
Beaded Jewelry - Create Your Own Style
Beading Inspiration - Using Color in Design
    Jewelry Studio - Wire Wrapping
    Bead on a Wire
    Perfect Match Earring Designs
Stringing, BeadStyle & Easy Wire Magazines

I've been quite inspired by all the ideas presented in these publications.

    Re: Whats on your bookshelf?

I do mostly stringing and simple wirework and have LOTS of beading and wireworking books, but here are some of my favorites.

My absolute favorite book for wireworking basics is All Wired Up by Mark Lareau.  It was one of the first books I purchased and I still refer to it today.  His how-to instrucftions are so easy to follow.

Bead on a Wire by Sharilyn Miller is another favorite.  Pictures and instructions are great and you'll learn how to oxidize silver with liver of sulphur.

Creating Wire and Beaded Jewelry by Linda Jones is a recent addition.  I love many of the wire links featured in this book and they appear easy to make.  There is a pair of square geometrical wire earrings and matching bracelet in this book that i can't wait to make!

Gemstone and Pearl Jewelry by Tammy Powley is another favorite.  I have made many projects in this book and they are easy to make.

I have Inspired Wire by Cynthia Wuller but I'm not impressed with it.  There are a couple of necklaces made with a jig that aren't bad, but everything else is too simple and basically plain to me.

Simply Pearls  by Nancy Alden is pretty good.  There is great information here on the quality of pearls and the types that are available, as well as the best ways to string them.  There are some really nice projects in here that i would like to try, but some of them will be time consuming to make.  I'd still like to try them though.

    Re: Whats on your bookshelf?

My list is small but growing slowly. I just got "The Beader's Handbook" by Juju Vail and "Wire Jewelry Workshop" by Susan Ray for my birthday. I have glanced through, but haven't sat down and read either yet. Both look to be nice books from my glancing.

My first two books were, "The Beader's Color Palette" by Margie Deeb and, "All Wired Up" by Mark Lareau. Both are excellent references that go to on a regular basis.

I only have two more and they are "The Color Book of Beaded Jewelry" by Genevieve Sterbenz and "Native American Leather and Bead Crafting" by Patty Cox. The Color Book is basically the same type of thing as Color Palette one. Don't get me worng, it is a great book, but you don't really NEED both of these as they are so similiar. I love the Leather and Bead one. It shows a lot of techniques that most beader's would not normally think of. Like making a natural paste and glueing them to the inside and outside of a ceremonial or decorative bowl. It has a much easier techniques of attatching beads to leather as well. Bead embroidery on leather is a whole different animal than doing it on cloth. You can trust me on that one. It has a nice moccasin pattern that I think I am going to adapt into a pair of boots. Use the foot part of the pattern, but make the sides, tongue, and back much longer. I'll let you knowif it works out. *laughz*

Well, that's all my Jewelry books, but I have 3 book cases filled with everything from E.A. Poe's greatest works, to auto manuals, to the Bible, Book of Islam, and Living Wicca. I do have a diverse taste in reading materials and I love to study religions so I have some pretty oddball stuff for a simple southern white boy. *laughz*

Here is an incomplete list of beading books I own – some are not listed because I do not know where I put them.  Of course, the rest of you are so [over]organized, you cannot comprehend that!  : -)

Native American Beadwork    William C. Orchards
Indian Bead-weaving Patterns    Horace R. Goodhue
How to do Bead Work    Mary White
Indian Craft    Chief “Dode” McIntosh and Harvey Shell
Beading with Herringbone Stitch    Vicki Star
    Netted Beadwork    Diane Fitzgerald
Beading with Brick Stitch    Diane Fitzgerald [autographed]
Indian Handcrafts    C. Keith Wilbur, M.D.
The complete Guide to Beading Techniques    Jane Davis
The Illustrated Bead Bible    Theresa Geary, Pn.D.
North American Beadwork Designs    Clark Weissler
Beading for the First Time   Ann Benson [ waste of money]
Art of Seed Beading    Elizabeth Gourley, Jane Davis & Ellen Talbott
Beadwork Basics    Ann Benson [ better than her other book ]
American Indian Beadwork    W.Ben Hunt and J.F. “Buck” Burshears
Peyote at Last    Barbara L. Grainger
    Heirloom Peyote    Brenda Whitehead
North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment    Lois Sherrr Dubin
and three tall & narrow books by Interweave, one was about beaded rings, and there are probably others, too …,

    Re: Whats on your bookshelf?

The books that I have and refer to often are:

    Stringing Style 1 & 2

    Chic and Easy Beading

and I just got The Beaders Color Palette by Margie Deeb  - which I am still looking through and love already

I look forward to seeing what other folks have on their shelves - I hate to buy a book and be disappointed - the book stores close to me have a limited selection of beading books so I tend to purchase online and on the recommendations of others

    Re: Whats on your bookshelf?

Due to the failure of my wife to send a "negative Response" to her crafts Book Club, I now have:

101 Gorgeous Earrings,  by Martingale & Company.    My comments;  decent instructions, clear photos.  I would not have ordered it.

The Complete Guide to Wire & Beaded Jewelry, by Linda Jones    My comments:  Large photo [full page] of each item, decent to fair [or better] instructions.  I can see me trying to do my versions of some of these.

I also have some new ones:

Handcrafting Chain & Bead Jewelry by Scott David Plumlee: nice variations on famous chain maille patterns (byzantine, box and inca puno) and everything around making your own jump rings from wire.

Mastering Beadwork by Carol Huber Cypher: I LUV just looking through this book with all the projects. I think this is a must-have for beadweavers.

Seed Bead Stitching by Beth Stone: many variations on traditional stitches. I love that one, too. So much fun to see what you can do with one stitch as brick or peyote.

Oh oh oh! I just bought Beads in Bloom by Arlene Baker, I've always wanted to learn to make french beaded flowers so I finally bought a book on it...It's not on my shelf yet, it's in the mail, but I can't wait for it to get here. It's actually the first beading book I have bought, I do have a tidy collection of magazines occupying some shelf space though.

I've got a couple older books, though I'm not sure where they are at the moment, haven't unpacked them yet...

One is "The Beaded Object", another is "The Complete History of Beads" and a third is... hmmm can't remember the name, it's a book on Lamp Working... dang, now I gotta go out and FIND the box or it will annoy me!

    Re: Whats on your bookshelf?

I want that new polymer bead book that was featured in todays email. "Making Polymer Clay Beads" by Carol Blackburn. That's my next step. I have 5 lbs of white and 2 packs of mixed colors to play with. I got a large toaster oven from a friend of mine to bake it in, but I am unsure of where to start. *laughz* I used to make D&D figurines from the stuff, but beads are a whole 'nother story. The book looks awesome and informative.
