Can anyone recommend a good source for very fine gold-filled or vermeil chain that is tarnish resistant? I used to purchase mine from Artbeads.com and Beadaholique.com but I was disappointed to find it tarnishing after about a month or two. Thanks in advance,

R.K.

R.K.

I typed a longer response to your question, but it went to moderation because I put in more than one link. So I am going to try and do this without doing a hyper-link, so you will need to a copy and paste. Sorry this has to be done this way.

This site has lots of information for you to help you understand about gold-filled and vermeil.   http://www.shoprhubarb.com/blog/2010/04/gold-plated-vermeil-gold-filled-information-about-gold.html

Off hand the only reliably source I can give you is Rio Grande, there are many out there. Have you tried your local bead store? They will sometimes carry fine silver, sterling silver, gold-filled wires, and vermeil beads. Check them out. One thing you need to remember, with all precious metals, the prices vary from day to day at places like Rio-Grande and other large wholesale precious metal dealers, whereas your local bead store will have a price based on the price at the time they bought it. I have known of very few local bead stores that will bother to check the gold and silver prices daily.

Hope this information helps you.

Happy Beading!!

SCB1,

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Rio Grande looks exactly like what I've been looking for.

Was the chain that tarnished vermeil?  I've never had any, but wonder if the silver could tarnish even under the gold.  I've never seen gold-filled anything tarnish.

I have to agree with Kipper............gold does not tarnish. I have old gold chains that are still in perfect shape, they may have a bit of dust or dirt on them (they are elder relatives estates) but the gold is gold. Maybe what you had was "gold toned" or some such descriptor that eliminates the need to use real gold. I've even bought some gold over copper and it is staying bright and clean.

Hope your new sources are going to supply you with the "real thing" so you don't have future problems. Donna

I think ArtBeads and Beadaholique also stock gold-filled chains.

Gold does not tarnish. That is one of the reasons why it is prized so highly for jewellery

I'm suspecting a thin gold plate which has worn off very quickly
