question about metal category

I have a question about the metal category for the beadstar competition. I know any wire work needs to be simple, but I'm not sure how far I can go before its considered too complicated and I'm disqualified. Can I use wire bent into simple coils and "S" shapes? And can I hammer the shapes to flatten them?

Bead Star Magazine first impression

I was thrilled to be selected as one of the winners in the Bead Star competition, and have been eagerly checking my mailbox every day, hoping my issue would be there. Nothing yet, but I couldn't wait, so I braved the holiday crowds and went out to Michaels this morning to sneak a peek.

I have to admit, I am disappointed in the magazine layout. I was expecting a beautiful, clean layout like "Stringing," but instead of showcasing each project with a full page layout and instructions, there is a large sponsor ad at the bottom of each page, which really detracts from the pieces, and gives a very cluttered look. Then you have to flip to the back to get the instructions.

Having worked in the advertising industry for 20 years as a graphic designer/art director, I am painfully aware of the "make my logo bigger" mentality of sponsors. Obviously, they need significant recognition in the magazine, but couldn't it have been more tastefully done? Like, how about each sponsor getting their logo on the page with each winning entry, and then a full page ad somewhere else in the magazine.

If I had not been involved in the contest, I would have never bought this magazine off the shelf. While many of the projects are terrific, the magazine itself is not very appealing to look at.

Bead Star Contest blues

I submitted twelve items to the bead star contest, not realizing that you could only submit one to each category. So I just had to cut my twelve down to three and that makes me sad. Oh well--now I can sell the ones that I couldn't submit. Anyone else make that mistake or just me? :)

The premier issue of Bead Star has hit the newsstands. It's great to finally see the winners and their projects. This was a fun contest and is a really great magazine. The projects are simple yet classy, elegant, traditional, modern, lucious, sassy .. you name it. And the winning project is definately a winner!

If you are going to Bead Fest Philadelphia this weekend, you'll want to check out this special event on Friday, August 22, 2008:

Don’t miss the Bead Star Bead Slam event on Friday from 1:00 p.m. – 5 p.m. All Bead Fest attendees and students are invited to battle it out by creating a beading project on site. Fire Mountain Gems will give each contestant a spool of beading wire, BeadingDaily.com will offer each contestant a beading box and Beadalon will be providing the tools. The contestants will provide the beads they purchased at the show and the inspiration. A panel of expert judges will select the 20 finalists and then on Saturday all of the show attendees will be invited to vote for their favorite project. The winners will be announced on Sunday at noon. Great prizes! Plus the Grand Prize Winner will even get their project published in the inaugural issue of Bead Star magazine.

I entered the contest and was surprised that I was accepted after hearing so many entered. I was wondering have you thought about keeping a tally going for next year? I mena I only know about 8 people and I told them and I know they voted..but part of me was wondering if I got many votes...and then what people liked. I mean I will still enter next year even if they dont tally the votes but I was just wondering is all.... Does anyone else want ot know how many votes people got or is it just me?

According to some of the earlier forum posts, it sounds like many of you were eagerly waiting for today's voting to begin. Now that you've seen our top 20 finalists in each category, what do you think?

I was amazed--and inspired--by the caliber of projects entered. Were you?

If you are one of the finalists--congratulations! If you entered and were not a finalist, I hope you had fun and will enter next year--it was very hard to narrow down each catagory to only 20!

I invite you to share your feedback--this is very exciting for us here at BEAD STAR headquarters. We hope you share the excitement.

Was polymer clay actually considered in the plastics category? It seems very odd that none of the finalists are polymer clay. My plastics entry was polymer clay and I was pretty sure had a good chance of winning - when I saw it didn't even make the finals I was very surprised. Just wondering...

I was enjoying viewing and voting on the Bead Star contest entries when I noticed something odd:

Entry #18 in the "Under $25" category is identical to #20 earrings on page 35 of the Fall 2007 Stringing Magazine.

It seems to me that this is contrary to the posted rules of the Bead Star contest. I'm surprised that Interweave Press has not noticed that this "original" design entry was actually published by them less than a year ago.

I noticed this unethical entry by chance, but am now wondering if there are others. What's going on, Interweave Press?

I have to say I enjoyed being a part of the voting process and there were some fine quality pieces. The one thing as a viewer and voter that I'd like the contestants to think about for next year and future contestants. The photograph you enter can make or break your piece. There were several pieces that i couldn't and wouldn't vote on simply because they were too difficult to view. The two major reasons were the photographs of dark colored jewelry was too dark with no lighting making it impossible to view and the other major problem were the photos taken from too far away, even when they were blown up, they were next to impossible to see the detail and colors well, making them again unvoteable. If I can't get right up on the piece and see detail and color, how can a person vote on quality color play which are so important in the jewelry industry. Since I know most of these folks are non-professional, I think it's important for them to know how critical their photos are. For me, it hurt a lot of possible contestants pieces just from the mear fact they were too difficult to view. Hope this helps in the future and good work to everyone.

I voted but would like to go back and see the peices again.

I have voted and it was hard.

Now my question is could you make a link to veiw the Jewelry again without haveing to vote?

After reading a post about how good the photos were I tried to go back and check the pictures again however I was locked out. I beleive the way you are doing the voting is very fair and only one vote per person. But it would be nice to be able to take another peek without messing up the vote

The photographs of the entries selected as finalists were absolutely gorgeous! I read the article that photos make or break your entry and now I see why. They blew my entries away. I would really like those that were chosen to share with us how you take such beautiful pictures! :) It would be nice to know how long they have been making jewelry and how long they have taken their own pictures. I really, really hope they would like to share with us. Or anyone on the form to share the "art of taking photos of jewelry". Lots of the backgrounds were invisible to the jewelry and other just complimented their jewelry. I was so impressed! Great job to all those selected. And better luck next time to others like me who didn't make it this time!

Question on voting

While looking at the pictures for the entries to the contest, we noticed that after the second entry in each category, the number of the entry does not match the filename of the entry (when the cursor is over the picture, the filename shows up). We were wondering if this would have any consequences on the voting.

For example, the #2 entry for seed beads has this for the filename of the entry- http://www.beadingdaily.com/beadstar/2008/images/seedbead/seedbead-02.jpg.

But, the #3 entry for seed beads has this for the filename of the entry - http://www.beadingdaily.com/beadstar/2008/images/seedbead/seedbead-20.jpg. And, from then on, the #4 entry is named 3, the #5 entry is named 4. The #20 entry is named 19.

We just want to make sure that the picture that is getting voted for is getting the credit. So, if we vote for #3, is #3 getting the credit, or #20, the filename?
