I got a little early Christmas gift yesterday.

NEW PLIERS =)

So I am now the the proud owner of some Lindstrom's pliers - Round-nose and Bent-nose.
And I am totally in love .... even tho I havent dont anything other than play around with some wire scraps making loops ....

This most be "pliers angels" ... cause they are so sweet.
I honestly cant believe how I have been able to make anything at all with my old stuff.

My old "no-name" pliers makes my hands hurt and tence up after holding them for like 2 min ... while the new Lindstrom's are like holding clouds =)

I am so so so so HAPPY!!!

Swine flu

Well, life sure does like to throw curve balls. My inlaws came for a short visit... arrived Tursday evening. DH went off to work Friday, and all the sudden came bursting in the door at... 10:30am... shaking uncontrolably. FREEZING. Took me an hour and an half to get him warmed up enoughto stop the shivering. Poor thing is layed flat out. So he's been stuck in bed unable to see his family, and I've been busy taking care of him and trying to be a good hostess. SO fun.

Anyway, here's to hoping for a speedy recovery!

1st Craft show of the season tomorrow

Okay, so tomorrow is the first craft show for me this year. I have even made some old fashion hard candy and some cookies to sell. Just a few to hopefully bring people in! LOL!

Also bought some plaster ornaments and wood cut outs that I have painted very patiently ( UGH! ) to sell as well as some jewelry. I found last year that booths with more variety had more sells. I did not do a lot of any one ( other than my jewelry ) thing so hopefully this will work out!

I have a craft show next Sunday ( 11-29 ) and one the Saturday after ( 12-5 ) and that is the only 3 I am doing this year. A couple of the others were just not worth the effort.

The one tomorrow is the one where last year I cut a necklace string so that I could put the focal on a plain black cord for a little girl to buy & give to her mom. When my sister went to pay for her Christmas tree this year at the library, the lady that took her money asked her if she attended last year. Sister said yes, that I had a booth. The lady asked where. When my sister told her the lady just smiled and said that they had talked about me all year! She was the grandmother of the little girl. It touched all of them so much that I would cut the string on a necklace to make the little girl happy. She informed my sister that they were all coming to buy from my booth this year! YEAH!

This is a craft show/tree auction that this library puts on as a fund raiser. Groups can pay a tree fee and then the group provides the tree, lights, decorations etc. Those trees are on display in the library for about 2 weeks prior to the craft show. Then the day of the craft show, they auction off the trees. The money for the tree goes to the group that entered it. So the library keeps only the craft booth rentals and the tree entrance fees. Last year was the first one and the turn out was really great! One tree went for $500! YIKES! Although most were going for around $100-$150! There was this one that was pink everything. Pink tree, pink lights, pink decorations, pink ribbon, Pink EVERYTHING! It was a breast cancer awareness tree. It was actually really cool.

It is a 2 hour drive one way but I will get to spend the day with my sister so it is worth it regardless. But please...wish me luck! I'll post Sunday how it went!

Class Conundrum

I need help. I am the owner of a small bead shop. I'm an intermediate/advanced beader, and I love teaching beading classes. People ask me "do you teach?" on a regular basis. However - how do I actually get them to sign up? I've got two classes on the calendar right now that several people have asked (no, BEGGED) me for. One of them is tomorrow - no takers. One of them is in two weeks - the 5th of December. I contacted the ladies that asked about that one - nope, they're not signing up 'right now' either. So what the? WHY ask about classes, BEG the instructor to find the time to put together a kit complete with instructions, beads, and whatever else is needed, and then NOT take the class that you asked for? It takes A LOT of work to put that all together. I've even tried asking for a deposit - still no luck. They still either don't sign up (because they don't have the deposit amount right then), or ask me to 'hold' the deposit til a later date and cancel on me. Holding deposits is really difficult to do, especially when I've had to purchase items to make up the classes with. Also - if I go ahead and sell the kits in the shop, without expecting them to take a class or ask for instruction, do I charge more - or less? I am getting very frustrated with this particular part of the bead biz - but hate to not give them the option. I'm also thinking of offering ONLY one on one sessions instead of an actual CLASS-with PREPAYMENT required. So HELP. What is your take?

Criss Cross 4 Holed Bead

Hello everyone! This is my first message. I'm not great with computers, so I'm glad I made it this far.

I need help in finding a bead. It is sterling silver, has four holes and I call it a criss cross bead, not a cross. There is a slight pattern on it. The little bead store I bought it from went out of business, but she said the bead was from China. The bead is no more than 4/16th high/wide.

I would appreciate any help!

Another pointed-back rhinestone order - will anyone share?

Some time ago, some of you were kind enough to share the cost of a rhinestone order I placed - I had to purchase a minimum.

Well, I'm in that boat again. Those last rhinestones I bought are good for some things, but are too small for the brass earwires I often use in my jewelry making, so I want to buy some pointed-back rhinestones in 2.85mm or 22pp. This size fits perfectly into the flower setting earwires at www.accessoriessusan.com. I really need to get some in at least 6 colors in this size. The minimum I have to pay is $42.75 per 10 gross of any size/color (that's 144 x 10, or 1,440 rhinestones for $42.75).

Is anyone interested in sharing this cost with me to get some rhinestones in this size? I want to get perhaps 6 or 7 different colors - Montana blue, Peridot, Emerald, Ruby, (Yellow)Topaz, Amethyst, and maybe Rose. Geez, I think I left out Sapphire, so we need to talk about choices. Peridot and Yellow Topaz have to remain in the list.

I want to get more colors, like Smoked Topaz, but I can only get priority colors to start, unless enough people express interest. For anyone who's willing to share, we can adjust these color choices, just let me know what colors you're interested in.

If anyone is interested, please let me know. NOTE: I can't get them until after the first of the year 2010, so we have time to plan. If we can get more colors it would be great, but the colors listed will be a good start.

Just went to a bead show!

Thought I'd share my enthusiasm with my beading friends on BD. I had no intention of going to this show this weekend. I made a new 'beading friend' through work, and she couldn't go to this one, so I was going to sit it out too. (Didn't really need anything...and I know ALL about the temptation!) So, I started a new project last night, and hit a snag. I needed 15/0 beads in a color to match some natural cat's eye...AND I DIDN"T HAVE ANY! [:'(]

I figured I could just make a quick trip...not counting the hour drive each way.....and be really good....not buy too much...make it really short and sweet, ya know? Well........best laid plans and all that!

I did find some wonderful things I just couldn't pass up. First there was the strand of swiss blue topaz faceted nuggets...then the claw shaped faceted green amethyst....then the 7 colors of 1.5-2mm seed pearls.....oh and the 8" strands of baroque pearls...I just couldn't leave those there!

So, unplanned trip that it was, it was worth it! Spent too much, but got GREAT prices, and the ribbing from Hubby when I got home wasn't too bad. (He knows me well) Now I just have to get ready for the next show in Jan.

Favorite resin for making charms?

Hi everyone, I found a few posts about making beads with resins using molds, but have you made charms and pendants by filling blank bezels with fun papers, stickers, photos, etc., and then using the resin as a sealant? I have found this be very addicting! While writing my book (Custom Cool Jewelry) I played with Diamond Glaze, Amazing Glaze (both available at www.ornamentea.com, along with blank bezels), and EasyCast 2-part epoxy but I am wondering if anyone has another favorite brand of resin? So far EasyCast is my favorite. Has anyone tried an epoxy called Magic-Glos that cures in sunlight? New products seem to hit the market every week.

The charm on the left was finished with Diamond Glaze (notice how it’s just a little cloudy in the center?), the charm at right was finished with EasyCast (see how crystal clear it is?).

Prayer Bead Swap

Okay, this was Marie's idea but I am organizing it with her blessing. Her idea was for people to swap a single bead that was a representative of themselves. Each person can then make a piece for themselves, for example a prayer bracelet, and then when prayers, thoughts are requested, this piece will be a symbol for the BD family as someone is saying their prayers/thoughts.

So here was my thoughts for organizing it, but as always open to suggestions:

Send me an e-mail that you want to participate with name, BD Name, and address by November 30th. Once I know how many participants, I will send an e-mail to all who signed up with my name, address, and how many participants. You will all send me that number of beads. Feel freel to include your own description with the beads.

For example, if I select a 8mm dark blue bicone, I would send enough for all participants to have one bead ( and only one bead ). I know how generous everyone is here, but we are looking for everyone to have just one bead to represent each "family" member.

( To clarify on the beads, if I choose a lampwork pink and white swirl, and there are 30 participants, I know that those 30 pink & white swirl beads may not be exact, but close enough so that when I type a description, we will all know who that bead represents. If there are 30 participants, don't just randomly put 30 different beads in your package to represent yourself. Does that make sense? )

When I receive all the beads, I will then make a master list of the name/BD name that goes with each bead. That list will be send back with each set of beads. So each participant will get a bead from each person to then create their own piece of prayer/thought jewelry for their bd family.

If possible, if each person could enclose a few stamps ( or a couple of dollars ) to help with return postage I would appreciate it. On a recent exchange, Alice ( if I remember correctly ) sent extra stamps ( which I had not thought of ) and it was very helpful as well. ( I don't know why I never thought of sending stamps...DUH! LOL! ).

I think that is about it. Thoughts or questions, or suggestions?

Challenge Swap #3: Fall Colors

Since it seems that everyone is enjoying CS2 so much, I figured we'd better get started on signups for the next round! A few people have said that a fall theme sounds good, so we'll run with that this time around.

In case you haven't been reading "Beader's Challenge #2: the JSmaz version", the idea of this challenge is that anyone who is interested needs to send me an email so I can get you on the list. Once I know how many people are participating, each person will send me enough beads, findings or other components in the theme colors for each participant to have at least one of something. How much you want to send over and above that is completely your choice. I don't want anyone to break the bank. To give you an idea, this past round had 18 participants. You will also need to include about $2 for return shipping.

Once I have all the contributions, I will make kits out of them and mail them back to all participants. We will then have a set amount of time (roughly a month or so) to make whatever you want from your kit. It can be one thing or many, and you can use any other beads or components from your stash as well as the kit beads. At the end we will share all our creations. We haven't reached the deadline for CS2 yet, so you'll have to keep your eyes peeled around mid-September for the reveal of everyone's creations.

I'll take signups through Sunday, 6 September so that gives people about 3 weeks.

I asked a dear friend here to send me a bead from her "neck of the woods" as I would like like to make a Friends prayer bracelet. Each bead will represent a BD friend who I can prayer for and think of when I look at the bracelet. I'm working on some polymere clay techniques and am hoping to make some of my own beads when I'm a bit more recouped - so if you would like one of those, I'd be happy to send one of those if you would prefer that.

Sign Up for the Focal Swap...

Okay, so I had some interested people so we are going to give this a try.

I thought of a Focal piece swap.

Guidelines ( since we don't like rules here! LOL! ):

Focal Piece would be anything that would be the focal of a piece. It could be stone, glass, crystal, lampwork, woven, metal, wire work, etc just use your judgement. You are all talented people!

Sign up by sending me an e-mail. You can do that by clicking on the contact here in this posting. I would like to have your name & address. This will make it easier since I can have labels ready to use for shipping.

Sign Ups will continue through October 2nd. This will give everyone a couple of weeks to see it ( and maybe bargain shop? ). On or about October 3rd, I will send e-mails to everyone to let them know how many we have signed up and where to send the focal pieces. I will post when I have done this so that you can watch for your e-mail.

Approximate value of the focal piece would be $5-$10. ( If you have a couple that add up and you want to group a couple together to get one in return for reasonable value I am okay with this. Just put them together with a note that that is what you are wanting to do). If you want to swap out several, that is fine. Unless otherwise noted, if you send me 3, you will get 3 back. Make sense?

If you know what the piece is made of please list that information with your name on a piece of paper with the focal piece. If you have an allergy, please list that as well. If you have an allergy, I will do my best to avoid it. I will forward the info about the focal and the person who sent it onto the next person. You do not have to list your address on this paper.

We will have a ship to me date of October 15th ( give or take ) since this is when some of the other swaps are shipping. If you are already at the post office anytime before that, feel free to ship. Once I get all the pieces, I will swap out the focals and mail them out. I will post when I have shipped so that you can be watching for them.

If possible, ( and I hate to ask this but I do have a kid in college! ) if you could stick a $1 or $2 in as well, I would appreciate it. This will help me to cover the cost of envelopes and shipping for your return focal. If money is tight or you are out of the US and don't have access to American currency, don't worry about it. I am just looking to ease some of the cost.

HOW THIS WORKS

Beader's Challenge Swap #2-the JSmaz version

Since Inca's idea of a challenge swap seems to be a success, I'm going to propose a 2nd one, but it will be slightly different this time-part Inca's idea and part Lisa's. Here's the plan:

Everyone who wants to participate will send any type of beads or components they want to me, and if everyone would also include about $2 to help offset return postage I would appreciate it. I will put together kits out of everything I receive and re-send them to all participants.

You can make anything you want from it, jewelry or non-jewelry. Once the kits are sent out I'll set a completion date. You can send pics of your finished piece to me, and I'll post them all, or you can post it yourself, whichever is easiest for you. There won't be any judging per se, just showing off the results of the challenge for all to see. This is strictly for fun so anyone is welcome to participate.

The theme colors for this challenge are blue, green and yellow. Any type of metal is fine if you want to send components or findings instead. Black, white and clear beads are also fine. I figured it would be easier to design around a set color palette instead of a mishmash. Stringing material could also be included if someone has interesting ribbon, cord, colored wire or beading wire, etc. Anything goes, basically.

I will give this a week or two for people to reply to this post or email me personally, and then I'll post the final list of participants so everyone will know approximately how much of their chosen item to send. It doesn't have to be a lot, just enough that everyone can have a few of each item. You can add anything else from your stash to complete the piece once you have the kit.

Pat and Lisa have already said they're interested. Who else wants to join?

Bead Swap #2 Lives Again!

Sherri and I have volunteered to sub for Dawn for Bead Swap #2. Swap #2 will work similar to the way Swap #1 worked. A package of beads will be mailed from person to person. When you receive the package, take out beads you love and contribute a similar amount of beads that you think others will love. Then mail the package to the next person on the list enclosed in the package. If you’d like to be included in Bead Swap #2, e-mail Lisa before June 26^th. Include your full name, e-mail address, mailing address, and the dates of any upcoming vacations in your e-mail. NOTE: Even if you’ve already signed up with Dawn, you need to sign up again by e-mailing Lisa.

Here are the details

§ NOTE: Sign-ups for Bead Swap #2 are now closed. Please stay tuned to Beading Daily where you can follow the progress of our two packages (you read that right, we have two packages traveling around the world at once!). Once we near the end of this round, we’ll begin accepting sign-ups for Round 3.

§ To participate in Bead Swap #2, e-mail Lisa with your full name, e-mail address, mailing address, and the dates of any upcoming vacations. NOTE: Even if you signed up with Dawn a couple months ago, you need to sign up again by e-mailing Lisa. Please include “Bead Swap #2” in the subject line. In case you’re not sure how to do that: click on Contact in the upper right-hand corner of this post (or any other post by Lisa), then click Send Lisa an Email. A window will pop up for you to type in your e-mail message. E-mails must be received by June 26^th. NOTE: Do not post your information to the forum!

§ I’m preparing a package of beads to start this round that includes stuff I have duplicates of, or extras of, that I think you’ll like. The focus of Round #2 has shifted a bit so that we each contribute beads that we think someone else will enjoy working with.

§ After June 26^th, we’ll shuffle the list of participants and mail the package to the first name on the list.

§ Since we have a large number of participants, we’ll split the list in half and Sherri will mail a second package at the same time that I mail the first. Both packages will be sent to everyone on the entire list, so you’ll receive a package in half the time and will eventually receive 2 packages. (To explain what I mean by that, let’s use 20 participants as an example. The first package will be mailed to Person #1 on the list, who will mail it to Person #2, and so on until it reaches Person #20, who will swap out beads, then mail it to Person #1 to begin the next round. The second package will start with Person #11, who will mail it to Person #12, and so on until it reaches Person #20, who will mail it to Person #1, and so on down the top portion of the list until it reaches Person #11 again to start the next round.)

§ When you receive a package, take out some beads that you love and add back others from your stash that you feel someone down the road will love. This is not the time to get rid of those plastic beads with the gold-colored paint flaking off! Search your stash for duplicates and pretty leftover beads to include in the package. Try to add to the box at least as much as you take out, both in quantity and value. If you take out a strand of beads, add back another strand of beads. If you take out a focal pendant, add back another focal pendant. Do your best to leave the package with at least as many fun, desirable beads as you received! Please label the things you contribute with your name so that everyone knows whom to thank for their particular favorites.

§ Take a photo of the package if possible, add your name to the (lightweight) journal enclosed, and mark the enclosed map with your location. Mail the package to the next person on the list enclosed in the package. Post a note to this thread that you’ve received/sent the package so we can track its progress.

§ Please try to forward the package to the next name on the list within 2 business days. When sending the package to US destinations, we‘ll use USPS Flat Rate envelopes, for which postage is only $4.95. Weight isn’t so important within the US, as we can put as much into the flat rate envelope as it will hold. But over in Europe, we need to try to keep the package under 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) to keep the postage reasonable.

§ Since many of us are vacationing at this time of year, we won’t keep the route secret for this round. We’ll do our best to estimate transit time from place to place and avoid having the package arrive at your home when you’re out of town. We’ve also asked Jeni to act as the “hub” for European participants again and will try to limit the number of trips the package takes across the pond.

Bead Swap #2 is open to all Beading Daily members who actively participate in the forum’s discussions. In an effort to include as many as possible, while also ensuring the security of our swap’s assets, we define “members who actively participate” as those who have been members for at least one (1) month and who have logged at least 100 posts.
