http://www.interweavestore.com/Jewelry/Magazines/Easy-Wire-CD-Collection.html?SessionThemeID=20

There are no reviews for it and I'm wondering if any of you have looked at these or have them and would recommend it. I'm a beginner with basically NO wire experience. I'm a beadweaver and really only interested in learning some basics for making a few simple clasps, maybe ear wires, and knowing how to use jumpings and eyepins better, etc.

So I need easy projects that dont require a lot tools past the basics. :-)

Is this a good choice?

Beauty makes Beauty

I was planning to buy jewelry for my coming wedding anniversary. I am however stuck with the process of making spirals. I understand one is supposed to hold the spiral with a flat nose pliers, and turn and push, but when I do so, the spiral keeps slipping. In fact, to prevent it from slipping I have to hold it so tight that the spiral gets flattened. The process appears relatively simply, and I am able to do it, but this seems to be a problem I am unable to find a solution.

I wonder if someone can help me.

Does anyone know if there is a way to use solder with copper, and what type of solder to use?
Loving simple jewelry, I'm planning to make these earrings mentioned in the subject.

My problem is, that the project calls for 18 gauge fine silver wire...

18 gauge just isn't comfortable for my ears, it's too thick. I can only wear up to 20 gauge.

Now there is the next problem: I'm not able to get 20 gauge fine silver wire here in Europe (I've stopped ordering from overseas, always a struggle with customs).
What I can get is either 20 gauge argentium wire or 21 gauge fine silver.

What would you recommend?

I have heard about people having problems with argentium not being fusable (although it should) or devoloping firescale (although it shouldn't), so I'd rather tend to use the 21 gauge fine silver. But can this gauge be hardened enough (by tumbling) for this kind of ear wires?

Looking forward to read your opinions.

Kerstin

Help with Chain

I ordered 15 ft of SS chain to make bridesmaid necklaces for my daughter's wedding. The pics and the description of the chain did not lead me to believe there would be any black antiquing on it. There is lots of black antique accents on the chain, oh no! I was curious if anyone has used it and what they think. I will be making simple rings and pendants. Very basic stuff that I don't want to tarnish fast and when it does, clean like silver. I am also curious what gauge would be best to learn with and what strength. I have played around with dead soft aluminum (i think) from Hobby lobby and a craft type wire I bought at walmart it is pretty stiff.

I got my 1st SBS Wire Jewelry magazine and love it. There a cute pin I want to try to make a simpler variation of. It requires hammering/flattening wire. Can plated or coated wire be flattened or manipulated like precious metal wire?

Also: I really want to work with half round and square wire. Does anyone know of a affordable wire I can get that are shaped other than round?

I appreciate any advise thanks

When there were more cabochon projects, the magazine sold out almost as fast as I could put it on the shelves. Over the last 4 or 5 issues, I've had to put most of them on clearance at reduced price - sales have dropped off almost completely. After looking more carefully at the more recent magazines that aren't selling, it seems to me that the reason they aren't selling is because SBSW has abandoned doing cabochon projects. I "get it" that the magazine has to appeal to a wide base of wire wrappers, but as my DH says, "you shouldn't forget who brought you to the dance".

My wire wrap instructor recommends SBSW over any other book or magazine for wire wrapping. She teaches a variety of classes - rings, bracelets, cabs, earrings, scarf slides and whatever else might come up and she uses the SBSW magazine as a "go to". She has always told her students that they can pick up a copy of SBSW and brush up if they can't remember whether to wrap counter clock wise or clockwise, etc.

And, it's not just my instructor who relies on SBSW to help with follow up from a class. In our small town, we have a huge amount of RV parks with lapidary shops. The people who participate in those lapidary classes usually want something more than a bell cap or a beavertail to put on their cabochons. The only resource I have for them - when it's in stock - is a book of basic wire wrapping techniques, that retails for $30! Most of my customers flinch at paying $8 or so for a magazine, and a $30 book is out of their range completely!

IMHO, it would be nice to at least have a "how to" section for simple wraps like gypsy wrap or cabochon wrap, just like the beading magazines have mini tutorials on doing crimps or how to do some of the bead stitches. That bit of basic instruction (basic cabs) might sell a few more magazines, because there would be a basic design that could be taken up a notch or changed at the whim of the person reading the magazine.

BTW - I saw the thread from a year or so ago about how designers sometimes don't like to have a design in the magazines, because it leads to all kinds of copyright issues, and I don't blame them at all. Whenever anyone wants to teach a class here, I warn them that it is very likely to become highjacked and become the design of the month at the next meeting at one of the RV parks or the local bead society. It's sad, but it happens. I don't ever put anything out as a sample that I wouldn't want someone to copy.

Okay, I'm done venting - thanks for letting me take up some bandwidth!

WOW I am so afraid to spend that kind of money. What if I don't like wire wrapping or the videos falls short of my expectations.

Has anyone here tried there instructional videos from this site and if so what is your review? Do you have any other videos you suggest that might cost less?
