Hi all--I'm new and have a question about tools

Hello to All,

I'm brand new to beading. So new in fact I don't have any tools...only lots of beads, lol. So I want to make lovely beadstringed rosary bracelets for myself and my friends, but I have no idea which of the entry (budget) tools are cheap and flimsy and which are good and will last a little while until i'm sure I'm going to stick with beading. I see lots of fairly low cost kits, but really only want the absolute basics. Does anyone have any advice? Weblinks or brand names would be great. Thanks so much in advance!

best thread for bead weaving

I just spent about 3 hours researching how to tell what a beading thread I have is made of and doing burn tests over and over to finish the research. I haven't beaded in a long time and before I quit I had just dabbled a bit in bead weaving and I didn't have a clue what this beautiful, soft thread was made of. I'm now 99% sure it is nylon (a burned finger later...That melted thread sure sticks good). I think I used something clear before, this is several little spools in various colors. I know this would show more because of it's color. What do you prefer for woven seed beading...it would sometimes have glass pearls or swarovski crystals too. I like to make the clasps of beads so that I don't have to worry about a crimp bead cutting through the thread.

We had a tiff with another publisher and no longer carry their magazines. The best they could do to resolve the issue was to tell me that to sell more magazines, I should make something from each edition as they hit the newsstands. A sample that customers can see "in real life" is supposed to inspire them to buy the magazine for that pattern. (Never mind that the magazines hit the grocery stores up to 2 weeks before I got them in my store - that really helps sales - NOT!)

Anyway, taking that advice, I've been trying to do something from every magazine.

I just made "Spiral Bound" by Erin Strother from the Fall 2011 Stringing magazine. Okay - I made MY version of "Spiral Bound". I used wire that I'm getting rid of because the color flakes off if you wrap with it, seed beads from my personal stash and added my own variety of spacers, plus a dichroic glass pendant with a spiral design.

Then, we got the newest edition of Creative Jewelry. I paged through it several times before I finally found "the least of evils". I didn't care for many of the designs and others just didn't "pop" for me. Finally, I noticed that I have some similar components to "Saucers and Sterling", and decided to see what I could do with that. Instead of Sterling curved tubes, I used gold plated twisted tubes, instead of ceramic saucers, I used Cape Amethyst 8mm rounds. The design called for amber chips, but I used red agate (aka carnelian) chips instead. I added a cloisonne focal bead that was predominantly the same shade of purple as the amethyst, with a little carnelian color from my personal stash, with a gold plated snap clasp and VOILA!

It wasn't until I had both necklaces and magazines set up on the counter as samples, that I noticed that Erin Strother also designed the "Saucers and Sterling" necklace. Kind of a neat coincidence - maybe I should declare September "Erin Strother Month"? <LOL> [NOTE TO ERIN STROTHER: I sincerely apologize for calling it "the least of evils", because the necklace is pretty and my version has gotten at least a dozen compliments in the 3 or 4 days it's been on display. I've even had a couple of customers want to buy it!]

My big gripe about any of the magazines lately is that the designs with metal all seem to use sterling silver or gold filled findings and spacers. With the prices of gold and silver reaching record highs almost on a weekly basis, I want to show my customers (who are often making things to sell to put gas in the car or buy a lunch ticket for their kids) that they can get the same look without breaking the bank or maxing out their credit cards!

I apologize for the photos - someday, probably when I retire, I'll have a REAL photo studio and a GOOD camera! <LOL>

Anyone trying to buy the $2.99 stringing digi editions?

In the email I got from BeadingDaily today, there were a bunch of discounted digi magazines including a couple of Stringing past issues that I wanted to buy. They were listed for $2.99 each in the email, but when I tried to buy them online one was $6.97 and the other was $4.19. Even when I tried to check out with them the price didn't change to $2.99. Does anybody know if there's a coupon code we need? It didn't list one in the email.

Best Stringing for Wrap Bracelents?

Howdy all! I am looking for a good string for wrap bracelets. My friend showed me a wrap bracelet and I couldn't believe they were asking $188 for it. I haven't beaded or made much in about 20 years since I was in my teens, but I knew I could make it. And I CAN! But I am having issues with the string knotting and getting caught up and such. I just used regular cotton thread. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best kind of thread for this? And preferably with different colors? Thanks in advance! Links would be appreciated. :)

Stringing submission- instructions question

I'm getting ready to submit my first piece to Stringing (hopefully it will get there before the deadline w/ fast shipping!). Reading through the Spring 2013 submission guidelines, one point is unclear to me. Does Stringing require that I send a printed copy of the instructions and resources with my piece, in addition to emailing a copy? Or is it okay to send the instructions via email ONLY?

"Make" your own silk and ribbon lengths?

Howdy, I know you read this 1K times a week - I'm a premie. My first craft was sewing. I haven't tried using lengths of silk or ribbons well, frankly, because as an ex sewer I can't cough up $2 for a 2 ft length of silk an inch wide. But I also can't say i ever sewed with silk, either. Do you know if people buy yards of silk and cut or rip tear it? Must it be stitched on the edges (either straight or with an overlocking stitch?). What I find in the shops are widths that have simply rolled into a tube. I wondered if any of you have gone home-made to save costs in this area? I'm OK with paying for my first projects just to see how I do with the materials. At the same time, I like to look ahead! Thanks so much. B2K

clasp advice

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and seeking advice!

I really like the look of clasps that are shaped like two letter "C"s and that sort of hook together. Don't know what they're called, which may be why I can't find them in the Shipwreck or other catalogues.

But maybe they're not sold much because they don't work well? If any of you have eperience with them, please share.

I purchased the Simply Organic Ebook from Intervewve store.

One of the projects calls for 1 card of light brown size 4 silk cord with attached needle. I have looked at Fire mountain. They do not use numbers to grade the thickness of their silk. It is A, B, C, D, etc. I wonder what thickness I should get? I checked at the glossary site here, but there was nothing about it.

I live in Japan, so getting an answer in mm would be great.....

Extremely basic stringing question

Ok, so I've been making jewelry for a while, but almost exclusively wired things with crimp beads. It wasn't until recently that I realized, hey, a string would probably be easier sometimes

Anyways, I was wondering what I would have to do differently using string instead of wire. Do I just tie the string to the jump bead? Do I still use crimp beads? What's the best way to go about it?

hello everyone. i've been a beader/jewelry maker on and off for about a year now and i've been commissioned to make jewelry for a friend's wedding this october.

the decided upon style is the aforementioned Bridal Necklace created by Kim Ruff (http://www.interweavestore.com/Beading/Projects/Bridal-Necklace.html). i'm ok with the instructions until i hit step 12.

what does she mean by "go up through the base bead?" where do i thread the tail on the left in the attached photo?

if anyone has made this necklace before and is able to shed some light on what i'm doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone prefer a specific brand of beading wire? They all really look the same to me and I'm not really sure what to purchase. I think the hobbylobby coupons usually sway my vote though.

Stringing flat pendant with one central hole

I've strung some beads on beading wire with a flattish flower shape in the centre front. I secured the flower by running my wire through its central hole, through a little bead, back through the same hole, pulled it tight and then finished the stringing on the other side. However when wearing this simple necklace, the top of the flower flops forward revealing the wire underneath.

Since the flower 'sits' on the beads behind it as it flops, I tried stringing some tiny beads at this point but it hardly helped.

What am I doing wrong? Can this problem even be solved or is it as I suspect inherent with a pendant which has a single central hole?

I did it...I submitted my idea...

Okay, I just finished and hit the send button for an idea to Stringing magazine. I included a couple of photos as well as an alternative one so that they can see how the same idea can be used to make something completely different. I realize that these are talented people and would be able to guess that, but I just thought it was a good idea.

I hope that I wasn't too wordy. I gave an explaination of where the idea came from, quick instructions of how to do it, and why I like the bracelet. I realize that this is probably a long shot but a year ago I would have never even thought of submitting an idea. So this was a HUGE step for me.

I will let you all know the second I get a yes or a no [:'(]. I do realize that by not trying the answer was a big no! Here's to hoping...

Stringing using stretch cord

Hello everybody! I am trying (for the first time) to use stretch cord when making a "bracelet" for a watch. How do you attach the cord to the watch. Do you use crimp beads? It seems like they might cut the cord. This may not be a good idea, but it seems like I have seen this type of thing in some of those catalogs I get by the hundreds in the mail!!! Any help would certainly be appreciated.
