Wrap Around Necklace Core - What is it?

Have you seen those necklaces that are just wrapped partially around the neck with both ends free in front?  (One end is tight around the neck, like a choker, and the other sort of hangs down.)  What would one use inside it to keep it stiff enough to stay on?  Memory wire?  Regular wire would break from metal fatigue, so my question is - what else could it be (if anything)?

One project I saw (maybe in B&B magazine) called for the kind of electrical wire they use when wiring a house, you know, inside the walls?  It has to be flexible enough to curve around corners, but not be floppy.

12 gauge anodized aluminum wire is great for this
