We sincerely hope you are enjoying our redesigned December 2008/January 2009 issue of Beadwork. This issue debuts a fresh new design, more helpful tips, new departments, and what we hope you agree are some of the most fabulous projects.

But we want to know what you think! Please visit http://www.interweave.com/bead/beadwork_magazine/ to take our survey or email beadwork@interweave.com.

I love the new design!  It's subtle, but artistic, and it just gives the whole magazine a wonderful feel.  The photographs are great, and the articles and projects are sooooooo interesting!  I took the survey, and I said that the only thing I would change about the magazine is I would add more projects and I would make it a monthly instead of a bi-monthly publication.  I could get my fix every month!  Hehehe...

I'm so curious, but unfortunately I haven't got my issue yet     Sad

Normally I've got my issues in the month before, but this time I still wait and hope.

How's this for the spectrum of opinions?  I do not like the new format.  I agree that it would be SO MUCH BETTER if it came every month instead!

Stan, just curious, but what don't you like about it?

    Jen,

In general, it is the total layout/rearrangement/appearance of the 'new' mag.  It doesn't "look right" to me.  When I first opened it up, I wondered 'What happened?"

    For some specifics:

    1.  The contents page is MUCH busier than in the previous issues.

    2.  I prefer the old layout for "Bead Biz".

Now, I do like the new emphasis to the W.O.R.D section, and I do like the 'holiday carol ornament' [the only project that interested me]-- maybe it's just because there isn't any thing else that appeals to me -- I do like the placement of Dustin's page next to 'Techniques' though.

It just doesn't look right, even now when I'm going through it again.

BTW: I like Salvador Dali and Rembrandt, but dislike Picasso and van Gough, in general, Impressionism turns me off.  Go figure...

As Billy said recently, " different strokes ..."

I was just curious.  And I love impressionism.  Heh.  But I also like the old Dutch Masters, so, hey.

My husband, on the other hand, wouldn't know a Dutch Master if it bit him.  Wink

There was a redesign? Why was I not informed? *laughz* Just kidding. I think I got 1 of each and I didn't notice a huge difference in the two. then again, I have purposely suscribed to 2 beading mags and 1 wireworking one, but have scripts for 3 bead and 2 wire ones now. I must have really been out there that night. *laughz* But with 5mags to read, the layouts and all just kind of blend into one another and I don't pay that much attention to teh contents and whatnot anyway. I jump into he middle and depending on what's on that page, I may go forward or backwards. And yes, I have read a mag from back to front before. *grinz*

Re: Do you like Beadwork's redesign?

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply - been stuck in bed with the 'flu for a week so although I've had plenty of time to read my latest issue I've been unable to get to the computer to stick my two pennyworth in! (I have already taken the survey although I was of course far too British and polite to nominate my own project as my favourite!)

OK, some things I didn't like: the new Contents layout (I can see why you've done it that way and it fits more info in, but I loved that old full-page project mosaic!); the banishment of 'Seeds' to the end next to the techniques (no, no, no, it's at the heart of what Beadwork is all about, it should be right up at the front!); the fact that there are now TWO 'Cool' departments (but maybe that's just my age talking); the new layout for the main project photos is too busy with insets etc. (preferred the old layout, techniques at the top, title and blurb at the bottom, nice big clean simple photo in between, perfect).

However, there were lots of things I did like: the new byline on the cover for starters, I'm all for being inspired and passionate; the Stitch Index is a great idea; bolder and clearer type for the instructions (someone put a lot of thought into this to improve its readability without actually making it larger); clearer headings and subheadings in the projects (and I love the way they're still painstakingly colour-matched to the photos and illustrations); and captions to the illustrations (and they're still those fabulous hand-drawn illustrations, please don't EVER change to computerized ones)!

And you know what I really, REALLY like? The fact that  you haven't thrown the baby out with the bathwater and changed lots of stuff just for the sake of change. I was very worried that a redesign might mean losing some of that Beadwork.... whatever-it-is that keeps me coming back for more... but I needn't have worried at all, it's still essentially the same magazine and it still radiates that enthusiasm and love of the craft that got me hooked on it in the first place.  Looking at it carefully with a view to answering the title question has made me appreciate all over again just how much care and attention to detail goes into every aspect of every issue! (But then, would one expect any less from editors and staff who are also beaders?)

So I guess in my long-winded way that counts as a Yes!

Re: Do you like Beadwork's redesign?

Oops, sorry, didn't mean to be a thread killer! But since I'm back here...

Beadwork also rocks because of the fabulous way you treat your contributors: you issue contracts; you turn my pencil scrawls into beautiful diagrams; you show me proofs; you check everything really carefully and ask if anything's unclear; you rewrite my rambling instructions so they are concise and logical; you pose those interesting contributor questions; you pay me promptly; you treat my work with care and respect and have it photographed so it looks a million dollars; you don't re-bead my design, so I know and your readers know that that's my original piece of beadwork they're looking at; you return my work carefully packaged; you let me know when that package has shipped so I can track it; you send me a contributor's copy of the magazine AND a reprint for my scrapbook; and as the icing on the cake there is always a personal note from the Editor - I've taken great encouragement from those lovely little messages!

I don't know of any other beading publication that does ALL of those things. They make such  a difference - thank you, and please keep on doing them!
