I'M IN A PANIC.  A FRIEND GAVE ME SOME BEAUTIFUL 12MM FIRE AGATE BICONES. I STARTED A NECKLACE AND RAN OUT.  I HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET TRYING TO FIND SOME MORE.  THERE ARE NONE.   DOES ANYONE KNOW A SOURCE I COULD ORDER FROM?   BLESSINGS, CAROLE

I did a Google search for "fire agate bicone 12mm", and Auntie's Beads came up as the 4th item.  They have them in 15" strands.  They are beautiful-you'll have to show us your necklace when you finish!

Hope this is what you needed...

Hi Carol,

hope you found, what you looked for. I also searched the internet and it seems to me that fire agate is an expensive semiprecious stone? Does anyone know how? Is it seldom? Normally agates are not that expensive.

Carole - www.gemmall.com has some 12X40 fire agate. I know that this is not the exact size but can you get something the would look nice with it?  Can you use your as the center and add to each end with something similar?

I have never bought from gem mall, I just found them through a MSN search.

If I find anything else I will post it.

Have a great day!

Dagmar,

Fire agate is also called "crab fire agate" and it falls into the "semi-precious" category with "ordinary" agates and jaspers. Both names are more or less "made up" rather than the actual names of the stone. If you are interested in learning more about any particular stone, you can check it out at www.mindat.org. The folks on their forums are very helpful! If you search on "white buffalo turquise" or "rainbow calsilica", you're get a real education! <grin>

Fire agate tends to be a little "pricey" because of the "fire" name. It's not necessarily "rare", just different. Most of the pieces look like white honeycombs filled wth orange colored stone that can be almost as clear as dark honey or as opaque as carnelian. I always think of reptile scales or fossil coral when I see it. Without the "honeycombs", it would be a plain red or orange agate, cut differently, it could be called banded agate or even carnelian. We had a vendor in the store the other day with some agate that had the same "honeycomb" pattern, but it was BLUE-GREEN! He didn't even try to call it something like "fire and water" agate or some such garbage. It was just "blue agate". THAT is what I like to see from my vendors! DOWN WITH MAKEY-UPPY NAMES!!! <grin>

I've got 3 strands of fire agate in the store, one strand of barrels, one of small drops (not even close to 12mm) and one of flat squares, but no bicones. Sorry about that! I just checked Fire Mountain Gems and they have some fire agate, but no bicones, either!
