The leafy tendrils on the etched-shell donut were the inspiration for this long, lean design. Learn to create a simple peyote bail with matte hematite size 11 seed beads and how to turn a donut into a focal clasp.  The finished necklace is 25" (adjustable).

Designer tip:  For faster stringing of this multistrand necklace, use a seed-bead spinning tool and curved big-eye needle when working the strands.  To wear the lariat, place the donut at the base of your neck with the seed-bead “vines” hanging downward in the front.

This is a companion project to Katie's Beading Secrets in the June/July 2009 issue of Beadwork.  In every issue, designer and author Katie Hacker presents the newest beading products and tips on how to use materials in unconventional ways.  Katie also presents “Beading Lessons” on each episode of the public television show Beads, Baubles & Jewels and is the author of many beading books, including Hip to Bead.

For those having problems downloading: FireFox tends to be the main problem.

1. Easiest solution is to try a different browser (Explorer, Safari, Chrome, etc.)

2. Here’s the fix that seems to work: You need to choose button #4 (bypass PDF download) from the dialog that comes up when you start the download, and it will work (when using FF 3.08, the first 3 button choices confuse the download as there is extra code attached to the PDF download). OR, you can change your 'download PDF' settings. Go to TOOLS>PDF DOWNLOAD OPTIONS choose the OPENING PDF 'tab' and then choose "use PDF plugin". The problem may be with an Add-On on Firefox called "PDF Download." If you have that add-on, either disable it or choose to ignore it and your problems should be over.

Good luck!

Just opened it and saved a copy without any difficulty and...I use Mozilla Firefox. This pattern gives me great ideas for my boro big hole pendants that I make. Thanks. Sue

I am thinking of making it longer and making it into a belt. Don't know if I want to go with larger beads or more strands . . . but it would have to fit through the hole in the donut.
