Net Full of Gems

Download Net Full of Gems

Create this easy netted choker by working the body of the collar first, then the decreases at the ends.  Although the technique is relatively simple, the results are stunning.  By varying the number and size of the gemstone chips and seed beads, you can create many versions, from a choker that hugs your neck to a long elegant rope of gems.  This project from Beadwork magazine will be free for a limited time.

Carol try right clicking on the file and save it as a target. Then once saved just click on the file and you will be able to open it. Grannie Ty

I made this several years ago after buying the pattern from Linda Richmand's website along with a nice supply of triangle seed beads. Just for the record, the photo above that comes with the pattern is a terrible representation of the necklace. It can be made very dressy or more casual. I don't think I can download a photo onto this forum's page, but will go back to the main page and see if I can send it to Michelle. I debated for a long time about colours. In the long run, the first one I made is the only one I have a photo of. It was done with a demin blue colored small stone chip and blue lined cystal 11/0 seed beeds. It goes very fast and easily. It is essentially a long tube that narrows at the ends. It doesn't look entirely like netting when it's finished unless you look at it closely because you're looking at a double thickness. Anyway, I found that I definitely prefered it done as a dressy necklace (with crystal chips and AB type seed beeds), rather than casually, as the denim colour was. My email is prbyerin@aol.com if anyone wants a photo. Thanks for reading, I guess I ran on a bit. Erin

On this lovely white on white necklace I cannot help but wonder if photographed against a grey/black or any solid color background might not have made it more outstanding...and possibley visible.

I'm disappointed. When free projects are published one would think that it was a NEW project, not just a re-run of one that was previously featured in your magazine. Under this assumption, I downloaded the project, made a copy for a friend whose computer is down. Then ... after all that waste of ink/paper I find that I have it in one of my old magazines. How disappointing!!

JocilleD I always check the bottom of the picture before downloading. It will tell you when it was origially published. That way I know if I need to just go to my stash of projects and where or if I need to print.

Since the photo above so poorly represents the necklace, it occurred to me to suggest this.....For those of you who are truly interested in making this necklace, go to lindarichmond.com and click on Bead Instructions...scroll down and you will find this necklace in two forms. First one made with silver pearls - it's actually a little overpowering in this form I think..but the last project on the page is the quartz gem chip necklace like the one above, but much better photographs. This really is more like what the choker/necklace will look like when you're finished. Might notice one other thing, there are a couple of rope neckalces which are essentially the same netting stitch, less beads around, since the choker is just a large tube. Hope this helps, Erin

Netting is my favourite stitch so many thanks for this lovely project. Many thanks, too, to ErinT for her very helpful comments. Looking at the other photos made the pattern 'click' for me.

JocilleD: I can understand your frustration but those of us who are relatively new to the beading scene greatly appreciate FREE patterns. Not all of us are lucky to have a treasure trove of old magazines to pull a design from. Also, Although I subscribe to many beading mags and have purchased many books on the subject, once I have browsed through the pages, I seldom remember a particular design unless I note it or make it right away, so it is nice to see these from a fresher perspective than my memory can serve! Thanks, too, Erin for your wise advice

We will occasionally offer totally new projects as well. Please understand that we pay our designers for projects, so even though they are free to you, they do cost us a bit to pay for illustrations, editing, photography and designer fees. It would be nice to have an unlimited budget for totally new free projects every day, but that is not possible at this time.

I just made this in rose quartz. It turned out beautifully! It was a little repetitive though and took longer than I expected but the end result is lovely! Chris
