I just HAVE to make some of these for friends who recently returned from Florence, Italy.  They said one of their most favorite parts of their trip were all the fireflies that sparkled at night around their hotel.

I love this project...I just have to make some for myself and my friends and family.  I just wonder, what department store would you go to to find the glow in the dark beads.  None of the department stores I have gone to have them or any kind of beads.  My bead store doesn't have the glow in the dark beads either.   HELP, please.

I don't know yet how they'd look, but pony beads come in glo-in-the-dark!

My daughter just reminded me that one of the polymer clays is available in glow-in-the-dark.  I bet we could make our own firefly butts; just remember to make the holes big enough for the 2 wires...

Well, I've just finished making 36 of these little critters for friends who talked of the wonderful fireflies in Florence, Italy.  I used up a lot of my bead stash...didn't go out and buy anything new to make 'em!  They don't glow in the dark but they certainly sparkle in the sunshine...and in every color of the rainbow, too!  Definitely mutant fireflies!  They sure were fun to make!  I'll be posting pics of them soon this weekend on my website and invite you to take a peek!   Thanks!  Tess www.treasureislandbooks.net/LITERARYLINKS.HTML

Go forth and Google "glow-in-the-dark beads" if you really want to make some of these little guys glow!  Lots of places carry several different kinds.  Have fun!

I found glow in the dark 4mm & 6mm plastic beads at Netcraft. They sell everything to make fishing lures - beads plus s & h were under $10.  Googling bead suppliers was nuts!  My stepson ties his own flies.....so.... Look up Netcraft or call 1-800-netcraft.  Happy fire fly "tying".  Sue J.

i have not seen a firefly personally as i live in an apartment in singapore. friends have seen them glow in caves in malaysia and raved about their beauty. after reading all these enthusiam on all the creations, i will make some too.

I'm with Michelle on not understanding why fellow beaders want to bead insects.  Does this stem from the Egyptians love of scarab beatles?  Or is it a leftover from Victorian times?

However, I have noticed that quite a few beaders seem to be married to or partnered with anglers, so maybe they've been inspired by their spouse's "fly fishing flies" (I could be in serious trouble if I didn't specify the type of "fly")!!!  I wonder if any beaders have been asked to make a firefly or other insect for their angler spouses?

Beaders be careful to buy your own fishing tackle for beading.  Some British beaders have found angler spouses using their Swarovski crystals for fishing - anglers' revenge?!

re: fire flies:  Allison mentioned swarovski crystals in connection with fly tying , I've taken many classes for making our own flies.  I found it very tedious but just realized that it contributed to my sense of layer design.  Sandie.

Ok. now I'm having trouble finding the 8mm black round beads with the holes big enough to pass wire through twice !!!
