I know this might sound silly, but I am not sure what the term "step up" means.  It is used in Step 5 and again the the "tip" box.  Can you explain for us novices, please.  Thank you.

Kathleen, perhaps a more direct explanation will help.  Once you've done peyote in a circle you're going to meet your start bead again.  In order to form a cylinder it's necessary to take an extra "step" by passing the needle "up" through TWO beads (the start bead and the next bead "up" in the next row).  This gives you the starting point for the next "round" (or row) of peyote.  You'll make the same extra step at the end of each round of peyote--going from the start bead of that round through the first bead you *added* in that round.  What will end up happening is that you'll be going up and over by one bead for the beginning of each round.  So as you make successive rounds your starting point will begin to spiral around the tube.  You'll see this if you use a different color bead for the start (or end)  of each row.  Does this make sense?  I hope I haven't confused the issue.

to Pandora: To add the other side of the clasp, use the long tail end of the thread from the beginning (that's why you leave 10 inches) and follow the same steps as attaching the end (step 7 & 8).

HI! Leslie here, editor in chief of Step by Step Beads. I hope I can answer some of these questions:

STEP UP

Think of it this way: Picture a barber pole with a red stripe running around a white pole. The red stripe is a spiral, one continuous red line.  If you stitch a peyote spiral around a straw, it is like one stripe, a continuous row that goes around and around, each circuit around the straw sitting on top of the one before. It is not really forming rings.

Now... picture stacking rings. If you make concentric rings, one by one, when you complete a ring you have to start the next ring in a new row that will sit on top of the ring just stitched.  Once you finish one ring , you have to "step up" to start a new ring . In beading this usually means having your needle exit in position to start the new row or ring. This is called "stepping up" because you literally step up from one row to the next row, where the new row will be. You step up when a stitch does not allow for continuous growth.

THE THIRD ROW

REMEMBER--in peyote you string rows 1 and 2 at the same time, and stitching row 3 makes them fall into their zipper-tooth alignment.   Are you remembering tthat you  skip every other bead as you add new beads? Once you have your initial circle knotted, you only add three new beads in each row before you step up.

ENDING A TUBE IN A CIRCLE

I assume you mean your tube to be endless, like a bangle? To do this, each end must fit into the other, like teeth of a zipper. You must make sure the end rows have the "in" beads" and the "out" beads correct. Try adding a row to one end if your ends don't seem to fit. Then, have your thread exit an "out" bead, and pass trhough an "out" bead on the other end. continue this way, passing through the "out" beads, as you piece the tube ends together.

FINSIHING the tube ends as a rope, ot a circle:

If you do NOT want an endless tube, simple pass through the "out" beads at the end of your tube and pull them snug, cupping them together slightly. Repeat 2-3 times to secure. Tie your working thread to an existing thread in the tube end in a neat overhand knot, and weave the thread into the beadwork along existing thread paths to secure. Trim. You can now, on new threads, attach a loop and button closure to your ends.
