Basic Materials for Seed Beading

Apr 18, 2012

I've long been an admirer--not a maker--of beadwoven jewelry. Recently, however, I've been inspired to try my hand at a few stitches, specifically ladder stitch, brick stitch, and peyote stitch. I've found the rhythm of stitching beads to be mesmerizing, just as people say, and I love that it's a hobby I can do on my lap while watching TV or a movie. Plus, this hobby requires few jewelry supplies. As a bead stringer, I've collected quite a few tubes of seed beads, which I've used as spacers or to create button loops in my jewelry. Here is a list of the other items I purchased to start stitching:

Basic Seed-Bead Stitching Materials & Tools:

* Seed beads (of course)

* Beading thread (I have Nymo size D)

* Beading needles (I think mine are size 10 John James needles)

* Thread conditioner or beeswax (to prevent fraying)

* Sharp scissors

* Beading mat (so beads don't roll all over)

I'll let you know if I come up with a seed-bead design worth sharing with the world. In the meantime, I'd love to hear about your first beadwoven project.
