Shaped Bead Craze--Inspiring Projects and Great Resources

Sep 18, 2013

After recently letting a friend borrow my new DVD on shaped beads, she asked me to recommend a few projects that use these beads. I immediately thought the list I complied for her would be great for a blog as I know she's not the first person who has combed through websites and magazines in search of shaped bead patterns. Did you know since late 2011 our issues of Beadwork magazine have highlighted work that uses these new beads (including peanuts, Tilas, CzechMates squares, peanuts, Twins, Superduos, and more)?

If you don't already have these issues of Beadwork, search for them at interweavestore.com. Several of these patterns are also available as an individual pattern download.

I've said before in blogs, DVDs, and Beadwork that it feels like a new shape is born each week. Well, now I'm more convinced than ever that this is true---check out these new pellet and thorn beads from Preciosa.

Although bugles aren't a new shape they shouldn't be overlooked. Here's a great ebook collection of 10 favorite bugle bead projects.

And here's a quick-and-easy way to find 10 top Tila projects all in one place.

Wondering the difference between many of these shapes? Want to know which ones are interchangeable? Did you miss my live webinar on bead substitutions? If you answered yes to these questions, I highly encourage you to check out my Dos and Don'ts of Bead Substitutions: A Detailed Look at the Similarities of Bead Shapes & Styles Webinar Download. In this webinar, I cover what to do when you can't find the exact beads shown in the magazine, explain sizing differences between beads and how they can affect your beading projects, give tips for saving money with economical substitutions for crystals and crystal pearls, and much more.

Which new shape do you like best? What are your favorite projects made with shaped beads? Please share them here!

Have fun,
Melinda
