5 Favorite Free Earring Making Projects

Jan 3, 2014

Since 2010, I've started off every year with a little beaded earring making challenge to myself: can I make one pair of beaded earrings every day for an entire month? I originally started this earring making challenge because beaded earring designs seem to be more difficult for me than other types of beaded jewelry, and I wanted to see if I could stretch my creative muscles a little bit and really explore all the possibilities of  beaded earrings patterns.

Of course, after 31 days of making beaded earrings, I'm usually resolved to not make another pair of beaded earrings, ever. But I also get a lot of ideas for new ways to use common jewelry making techniques, get inspired to try new designs like resin and wire jewelry patterns, and even invent new ways to make easy beaded bezels for making tiny cabochons into earring making supplies.

And if you want to challenge yourself to make some new earrings to start off 2014, check out these five free earring projects from Beading Daily!

earring-making For my annual earring making challenge, I have a rule: earrings don't have to take more than ten minutes to make. The Bijou Blossoms earring making project by Anna Tollin is the perfect way to get your earring making machine warmed up. They're a beautiful way to combine some of those hard-to-use crystal beads in your stash, or get creative and recycle old jewelry finds from your local thrift or resale shop!

If one of your beading resolutions for 2014 is to learn how to read a peyote stitch pattern, the Summer Bird House Earrings by Judi Wood are the perfect way to get started! Plus, there's something about stitching up a pair of spring-like bird house earrings that reminds me our long, cold winter won't last forever.

earring-making And while we're thinking spring for beaded earrings patterns, Kelli Burns' Hydrangea Earrings are perfect for movie night at home -- get yourself a plate of snacks, your favorite movie, and bead the night away. In the morning, you'll have a pair of pretty beaded earrings that you can wear with your favorite sweaters and jeans.
earring-projects If you love the look of trendy feather jewelry, you'll love these Umber Pheasant Feather Earrings by Melody McDuffee. Look for feathers in your local craft store, or try a fly fishing equipment shop. (Fly fishermen use all sorts of feathers for tying "flies" that they use for fishing!) Brightly colored glass beads can really make these beaded earrings into runway-worthy additions to your collection of beaded jewelry.
One of the projects that made me want to learn more about wire jewelry patterns was a wire and seed bead necklace designed by Seed Bead Fusion author Rachel Nelson Smith. These Pea Pod Earrings by Lindsay Burke of Fusion Beads use the same technique -- wrapping fine-gauge wire loaded with seed beads around a thicker wire frame -- to create a pair of totally funky beaded earrings! Give these earrings a try, and you might find yourself inspired to learn more wire jewelry techniques in 2014!

I remember making a pair of the lovely Hydrangea earrings when first published.

I sold them to a small girl at a charity bazaar. I hope that she was inspired to take up beading herself !  I rarely make earrings as I don't have pierced ears.

Are your findings masde of surgical steel? I am VERY alergic to metals and can ONLY wear surgical steel jewelry. That's fine with me as I look better with silver than gold. Had my colors done back when it was the rage. I was sceptical until I noticed I never received compliments unless my jewelry was silver color.
