Work Table Wednesday: Incomplete Beaded Earrings

Jan 17, 2012

This Wednesday, I am frantically trying to get caught up on my Earring-a-Day challenge. Yes, fellow beaders, I got behind over the weekend on my earring making challenge, but at least I have a good reason: we took some time to celebrate my son's fourth birthday!

Put on your creative thinking caps: what would YOU do with these vintage glass cabochons?

So today, in between my preparations for the Tucson gem and mineral shows and my regular day-to-day responsibilities, I took a few minutes and sat down with my beading tray to see if I could squeeze in a few pairs of earrings. I managed to get a good start on two pairs, but now I'm stuck!

I made a peyote stitch bezel around the two vintage glass cabochons that I bought years ago from The Beadin' Path, but now I can't figure out what to do with them next. I can't find any beads in my stash that are tall enough to go around the bezels, and I can't decide on what colors I want to go with for the rest of the earrings. I had initially thought about doing black and hot pink (to match the flashes of pink and green in the glass), but now I'm not so sure. What would you do with these?

The other pair you see in the picture that is partly finished is inspired by Rachel Nelson-Smith's Bead Riffs. I loved her instructions for working tubular right-angle weave around a plastic ring to make a clasp, and I thought, well, why not earrings? The brown pair is patiently waiting for me to embellish them with vines and Czech pressed glass leaves. I get the feeling that I'll be wearing those quite a bit in the future!

How are your earrings coming? Have you gone over to the Reader Photo Gallery and looked at all the gorgeous beaded earring eye candy? Leave a comment and give me some suggestions for what to do with those bead bezeled vintage glass cabochons - I need some help!

Bead Happy,

The picture is too small to see any detail :(

I don't normally embroider, so I'd just glued the cabs into metal settings and attached earwires :) But if you want to go with seed beads/embroidery, I'd say go around bezels a couple of times, then cut them out and add kind of lace edge to them (you know, beaded loops). Hope that helps :).

I just made a pair of earrings using only wire.  So I may call it wire weaving.  I really like the feel of it.  Very thin wire is quite versatile and I am coming up with quite a few ideas.

I shared this tutorial in my blog .

I did not write tutorials too much, so this was good practice for me.
