| Some of the fabulous metal sequins, buttons and trims I bought in New York City! |
|
While M & J Trimming isn't technically a bead shop, for
anyone who loves to create beaded jewelry and accessories of all kinds, this is
the place to go!
I'd heard from a couple of fellow beaders about this amazing
shop, and so on my recent bead shopping trip to New York City we decided to
make one last "quick" stop into M & J Trimming before catching our train
back to New Jersey. Boy, am I glad we did!
The first thing that completely overwhelmed me was the walls
- yes, full walls! - of buttons in every shape, size, color, and style that you
can imagine. After browsing those buttons for a few minutes, I chose two
metallic toggles roughly the shape and size of deer antler pieces. These will
make perfect toggle closures for some of my edgier necklace and bracelet
designs, and I can't wait to use them.
Then, just as I was deciding what to look at next, my
awesome friend came up to me and said, "You've got to see these metal sequins."
Since I had just spent a small fortune on other types and shapes of sequins at
another bead shop, I knew I had to take a look. Sure enough, these weren't just
metallic sequins - they were actual pieces of thin sheet metal that had been
cut and punched with a single hole in the center. I picked out two colors of
the freeform heart-shaped sequins and a bag of yummy round copper sequins.
Finally, I went over to the laces, edgings, and trims.
Immediately, this gorgeous gold metallic figure-eight trim jumped out at me,
and I had a vision of a beaded necklace with this incorporated into the
stitching. One yard to go, please!
What I didn't have the time (or energy) to explore were the
countless Swarovski edgings, flat backs, and iron-on embellishments. For anyone
who loves to add some sparkle, this would be the place to find some absolutely
wonderful bling.
If you're the type of person who likes to experiment with
your beadwork in adding different kinds of embellishments and incorporating
unusual materials, M & J Trimming is the place for you!
You can find M & J Trimming at 1006 Sixth Avenue between
37th and 38th Streets in Manhattan.
Bead Happy,

Jennifer
