One of two bracelets I made the summer that my mom passed away. Bracelets are a great way to make a very personal statement with your own handmade jewelry!
Summer of 2008 was hard for my family. I was adjusting to being a new mom. I was venturing out into the world of selling my handmade jewelry as my only source of income, which would have been nerve-wracking all by itself. And then my mom passed away at the beginning of July. It was enough to make me feel like I was in a constant tailspin, wondering what was going to happen next.
In the middle of it all, I sat down one morning while my son was taking his nap and took out my beads. I didn't have a lot of time, but I wanted to make a couple of bracelets with some jewelry components I had picked up a couple of days earlier. They were brushed silver metal and had inspirational quotes on them. I dug through my stash and got started.
The first bracelet I made had a component that read, "Where there is love, there is life." That quote from Mahatma Gandi served as a little bit of comfort so soon after losing my mom. I made that bracelet with some of my favorite small turquoise nuggets for protection and some freshwater pearls. The other bracelet that I made that afternoon was made from vintage German glass beads, more freshwater pearls, and had a component that read, "Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace and power to it." That second bracelet with its quote by Goethe found a new home a few months later with a friend who was going through her own personal trials that summer as well.
Since then, I've started to look at bracelets as a way to make a very personal statement with my beaded jewelry. It's comforting to wear a bracelet all day and just look down at my wrist when I need a little pick-me-up or another little bit of encouragement. (Imagine trying to do that with a necklace or a pair of earrings - you'd be looking the mirror all day, and it might like sort of, well, odd. Right?) But bracelets are perfect for giving yourself - or someone else - something beautiful to look at all day.
