Easy Turn for Odd-Count Peyote

Leslie Rogalski
Editor in Chief, Step by Step Beads

Do you think odd-count peyote is a wicked ol’ stitch?  Does the extra time and tangle to make that quirky figure-8 twist at the end of every row just burn you up?

Well, check out this easy trick and you’ll be the Wizard of Odds in no time! In my Odd Count Peyote Doodlebeads video, learn how to work odd-count peyote using a simple looping stitch, making odd-count now as easy as even-count—and opening a world of design possibilities for you.

Odd count peyote has a center line of symmetry, which is the key to its powers for geometric balance. It’s amusingly ironic: odd-count has a more “even” look to it than even-count!  With symmetrical beads at both sides, there’s a definite middle bead smack in the center of each row. Attaching a clasp or other focal beads becomes simpler. Center line symmetry allows you to increase and decrease in perfect harmony. Taper ends to an elegant central point or slice off at an angle; either way, you wind up with a dramatic ending.

So let the glorious news be spread, the wicked odd stitch at last is dead! Once you know this easy turning method, nothing will hold you back from making odd-count projects. Make sure not to miss of our designs by subscribing to Step by Step Beads. Once you've mastered peyote with Doodlebeads, you'll be inspired to try projects like the Celtic Cuff and the Starburst pendant as featured in Step by Step Beads.

I am not happy with how wonky this sits, compared to the slightly more complex turn associated with odd count peyote. If you look at the end of the video, you will see first how the rows do not line up at the left side of the real beads photo, then do after the needle is put through them. You can see a very loose thread next to the beads after the needle forces them to line up. When I tried this for myself, the beadwork is not flat on that side, but wobbles, because it is not attached to the bead in between, on the row below. This is what I call a quck and dirty method of this process, but will not produce a nice, flat piece of peyote.

For beginners and those of seeking faster beading tricks, this turn is ideal, since it demonstrates the positions of the beads in odd-count and shows how to work your thread path to exit in position to continue. Keeping thread tension snug always helps. However, you are partly right in that this turn won't have the exact results of the complex turn. If you know the more complex turn, certainly that can be applied--even every few rows--to tighten or further secure the beadwork. I never had anything wonky or wobbly from doing this method, and use it almost all the time ow, for all sizes of beads. I'm sorry you've had trouble, but hope you find it a neat trick for smaller pieces or to apply periodically in your work. And again, remember that tension is certainly key, throughout any piece of beadwork. Leslie editor Step by Step Beads, Creative jewelry, bead Star and Doodlebeads

I think this is a wonderful video. You make it easy to understand. You show it on paper, then with real beads. And - you go through enough rows that we can see how it's going to look. I've only completed one small peyote stitch project but want to do more. I think I've always seen the stitch as more complicated than it has to be, which is silly since I do so much bead netting! I guess it's all about good instructions and positive thinking! ;-) Thank you.

Thank you Leslie, i have been a seed beader for about 7 years. Odd-Count was one of my nemisis. Not only did you make it super simple to understand, but I went straight away to my beading table and whipped out one your rings. It was just a fluke that I had made it in colors the my 26 year old son just loved. He is wearing it ALL the time

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! I am so grateful to be able to actually see what you write about. OK -- one more questioning trip to one of my "techy" children and an additional thank-you to you for making be think and .... eventually....create several new skills. Redogsgirl

I kind of agree with seedbeader on her take about doing the peyote stitch. Although I do a lot of netting and other to others somewhat complicated stitches, the peyote stitch overwhelms me. I love the way it looks and I have only done a small "stamp,", so this may be an easier way for me to follow and not get so aggravated. Thanks.
