Emergency Jewelry and the Beaders Showcase

Necklace by Ashley,
a teen member
of Ohio Beaders
Last year, at the age of 14 1/2, Ashley created this beautiful rhodonite, black onyx, and sterling silver necklace and earring set. (See a close-up of her project.) Ashley creates a lot of "emergency jewelry" when she needs something to wear at the last minute. I like that phrase "emergency jewelry" a lot. The phrase even works in reverse: "jewelry emergency." Wouldn't that make a fun answering machine message? "I'm sorry, I'm unable to come to the phone right now because I'm having a jewelry emergency. Please leave your name, number, and time you called. . ."

Ashley is a member of Ohio Beaders, an online group of about 100 members who range in age from 12 to 78. The group is moderated by Signe Ivanovitch, a passionate beader who creates bracelets and watches for breast cancer awareness. Eva Sherman, the designer of All That Jazz (one of the featured projects this week), is also a member.

Even if you're nowhere near Ohio, it's worth checking out their online Ohio Beaders Showcase for a little inspiration. Some of the features I especially liked:

  • The project photos are large and clear, making it easy to see (and admire) the details. Recent projects included lampworked beads, chain maille, stringing, wirework, bead embroidery, beaded dolls, micro macrame, peyote . . . the list goes on and on!
  • Some projects are for sale, while others are just for show. (The projects for sale just list the beader's contact information; there is no shopping cart.) This seems like a great way to experiment with selling some of your pieces without having to make the commitment for an entire website of your own.
  • I also love how they list links to both bead shops and individuals—what a great way to support each other!
  • The website is built using free blog software, which makes it easier (and cheaper) to update than a more traditional website.

Have fun creating some "emergency jewelry" to wear this weekend! See you Monday!
