Win a Kit Of Soutache Bead Embroidery Supplies!

Apr 17, 2014

One of the best parts of my job is getting to participate in the Beadwork magazine challenge every now and then -- it pushes me to get back to my beads, and it gives me a reason to learn new beading and embroidery techniques, like soutache!

I was equal parts excited and terrified when I opened this amazing kit from our friends at The BeadSmith. While I've long been an admirer of the gorgeous soutache bead embroidery I see being posted, I've never been particularly talented at sewing fabrics and ribbons cords. Honestly, I still have nightmares about being in the Girl Scouts in the third grade, trying to earn my needlecrafts badge, and finally deciding that going through half a box of self-stick bandages meant that I should give up on trying to learn the French knot.

But the Lunasoft cabochons in this kit were just too tempting. I admit it, I've got a cabochon problem -- they're in pretty much every drawer, box, and bag of my bead stash. If I can bezel a cabochon with bead embroidery or off-loom bead-weaving, I can do it with soutache, right?

Using the cabochons as the focal points for my soutache necklace certainly made the process easier! I found a couple of good soutache videos on YouTube and went at it. After I stitched the soutache cord around the cabochons, I broke out a couple of my precious cream-colored 3mm round glass druk beads. I can't get these from my original source anymore, so I tend to hoard them, but they were just perfect to add a little bit of light to the lovely, soft glowing cabochons.

For this pendant, I figured a simple necklace would be best, because I didn't want to distract too much from the shapes and lines of the soutache bead embroidery. A simple two-strand leather cord made this piece soft, light, and oh-so-wearable!

But of course, now we need you to suggest a name for it! Just leave a comment on this blog post before Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 12 midnight ET. We'll choose the name we like the best, and the winner will receive a kit just like the one I got to make my soutache bead embroidery pendant! (Please note: due to customs regulations, we can only ship kits to residents of the United States.)

So put on your thinking caps, and let's see those great ideas for names!

Bead Happy,

Jennifer

Bronze Goddess. The textures of the beads are appealing and the combination of beadwork balances the piece. There are a lot of Goddess images that are abstract and this one seems fitting in a variety of ways. Beautiful piece!!

I apologize if this is a duplicate post. I typed one in and it didn't appear to load.

My suggested name is Bronze Goddess. There are a variety of forms that are goddess like in a very abstract way. The beauty and balance of this piece is amazing. I haven't done any embroidery but keep finding a lot of interesting items.

Another variation on the name could be Soutache Goddess.

Regardless, it's a beautiful piece. Well done!!
