Marcia DeCoster was one of my first beading "idols", and someone who inspired me to learn right-angle weave. Working up her beautiful and technically challenging right-angle weave designs has been an enormous part of my growth as a bead-weaving enthusiast and designer. Her innovative explorations of right-angle weave have made her designs stand out, and they keep beaders like me coming back for more. I chose five of my favorite right-angle weave designs by Marcia to share with you in today's blog. Enjoy!
Elipse Necklace: I stitched up one of these during the winter before my son's first birthday. It still remains one of my favorite pieces of bead-weaving, and it never fails to generate compliments when I wear it. I have wonderful memories of working the beautiful curves of this right-angle weave piece, and just marveling at how simple it really was!
Terracita Bracelet: I love bead-weaving that incorporates glass beads other than seed beads, and this right-angle weave bracelet is exactly my kind of project. I just happen to have an enormous collection of vintage glass nailheads in my bead stash, just like the ones used in this bracelet. Hmmm… Maybe that's why I love it so much?
Summer Soiree: This elegant beaded necklace is my perfect idea of a right-angle weave project. Using the large, round pearls means that the neck strap works up fast, and the easy, elegant crystal stone at the focal point adds the perfect accent to the finished necklace.
Disco Squares Bracelet: Being born a bit too late to take part in the light-up-dance-floor-disco experience, I figure I'll just have to live vicariously through the Disco Squares Bracelet. This is one of the designs that I could just make over and over again, learning something new each time about right-angle weave, constructing components, layering beadwork, and more.
New York State of Mind: No, just because I love my adopted home state of New York doesn't mean that I'm biased at all in picking this last bead-weaving project to round out my top five. But I do love the subtle, smoky colors of the seed beads, the way Marcia uses the crystal sew-on beads, and the fact that this project is just a delight to make! I hoarded a small stash of those single-hole crystal sew-on beads in my stash for ages, and when I saw this design, I knew it was the bead-weaving project I had been waiting for to use them all up.
